Happy Monday everyone! I hope you all had a stellar weekend. It’s my best friend’s birthday today, HAPPY BIRTHDAY C! Therefore, I’m writing today’s post in honor of her favorite thing: Matcha. The girl is obsessed but I love her for it. Let’s get started.
Confession time guys: I don’t always love coffee. I could honestly go for months without it. I love the smell of it. But some times the acidic side takes a toll on my stomach and we just don’t get along. Shocking, I know. So when my best friend introduced me to matcha green tea lattes, I feel in love instantly.
Matcha is made from whole green tea leaves. Rather than steeping the tea like you would a classic black or green tea, they finely grind the leaves into a powder. Because of this, matcha tends to have more caffeine than your other tea drinks.
Here are just a few things to note about this wonderful drink:
How long has it been around?
Historically, it has been a part of the Japanese culture since the 12th century.
What are the benefits of using it?
Matcha has quite a few health happy qualities. From boosting metabolism, aiding in weight loss and cleansing the body, this powdered tea is a bit of a wonder drink. It is also rich in vitamins and minerals that can help eliminate heavy metals and chemicals from the body. Plus, it is filled with 20 times more antioxidants than pomegranates of blueberries!
How do I use it?
There are tons of recipes that you can use the powder in. From desserts to teas, it seems like matcha is having a serious moment. Here are a few of my favorite ways:
Where can I find it?
Most coffee shops carry it these days. However, be aware that more than likely these powdered forms have sugar already in them. And if you’re adding extra sugar or non-dairy milks with sweetener, you’re probably getting more sugar than you’ve bargained for. If you’re unsure about the type they use or aren’t able to find out if it comes with sugar in it, make sure to say you want it unsweetened. Otherwise, you can purchase it at most of your local grocery stores without the added sugar. There is a great starter kit you can get here* as well.
Is it better than coffee?
This is probably more a personal thing. Personally, I find that coffee can be too acidic for me but matcha doesn’t affect me as much. However, both are best used in moderation because of the caffeine.
