A few years ago I picked up Gwyneth Paltrow’s book It’s All Good*, I loved the idea of what she was saying. I could gravitate towards the idea that certain foods you eat don’t always agree with your body. But I felt so overwhelmed by everything she was talking about. Nutritional yeast, there’s a yeast that doesn’t involve bread? Xylitol? Something I’d never heard of and had no clue where I could buy. Quinoa? Okay, I’d heard of it but I wasn’t quite as obsessed yet. It was like being thrown in the deep end of the health pool with a noodle. You’ll float but it might take some effort.
About a year later, I found myself reacting to things I was eating without understanding why. I’d get horrible stomach pains but couldn’t figure out what caused them. I knew something wasn’t right with my body and I wanted to listen.
And after months of frustration, I went a bit extreme. I decided to become my own version of vegan. And you know what? The world didn’t end. I could live without cheese, meat and eggs. I didn’t need to have the pizza everyone else was chomping down or fried fish. Being healthy and feeling my best was worth more to me.
Now, this blog isn’t to bash all of the people who love fried fish and pizza. Heck, I’m pretty sure I’ve made both recently for my parents. People always think I’m offended when they eat something in front of me that I don’t have regularly in my diet. Truth be told, I don’t care. Go for it. I made these changes for me and I’ve never been more attuned to my body in my life. I’ve learned more about health, hormones and what my body needs in the time I’ve been experimenting with my diet than I would have otherwise.
And it’s because of my learning and love for wellness that were are here today. It’s why I created Savee & Savory. I want this to be resource for people to learn what I felt so lost learning. Many of my friends don’t know how to cook for themselves at such a young age. If you are one of those millennials who shops for things and think I have no idea how I’d use that, this is the place for you.
I want to help you learn how to make a meal that you’d enjoy rather than reaching for Seamless or Grubhub every night. I want to help you finally understand how to use nutritional yeast. And most of all I want you to know healthy is a lifestyle.
Making changes take time and learning everything about your body won’t happen overnight. What works for me may not work for you. But I hope that along the way we can figure out together.
